Are you a caregiver with a story?

The Caregiver Tribute Book is a way to give special recognition
to the loved one for whom you provide care.

In life we have many roles, parent, child, brother, sister, friend, co-worker, boss, mentor, and sometimes - caregiver. Often, we as an individuals, are called upon to pick up this role by becoming a caregiver to a parent, child, friend or relative who needs life assistance due to illness, disability, old age or dementia.

The caregiver role is one that carries with it many challenges for caregivers and those in our care. Yet, it also demonstrates our humanity to others and has its rewards. I would like to give a voice to caregivers who would like to share their experiences, the good and the challenges. There is comfort in knowing that you are not alone with your feelings of frustration, anger, fatigue.. and yes also joy and fulfillment.

The Caregiver Tribute book will include short stories, approximately 2-5 pages each. The stories will contain the following elements and can be submitted in writing, or an interview can be scheduled, recorded and transcribed.

Each submission should have the following elements:
  • Photo - Each story will start with a photo of either you the caregiver, the person receiving the care, or the both of you together. It doesn't have to be a recent photo, just something that will personalize the story for the reader.
  • Identification - the story can include just first names of you and the person receiving care, or full names. The choice is yours, just note that in your submission. Also, if you are open to receiving contact from readers, at the end of the story simply include contact information.
  • Essence - Next, tell us about the person for whom you are providing care. Maybe what he/she did for a living, accomplishments, relationships with friends/family, personality, what you and/or others love about this person. Simply what you want to world to know about the essence of the person for whom you provide care.
  • Challenges - What was the most challenging aspect/aspects for you in providing care? How did you cope with or meet these challenges?
  • Joy/Happiness - Part of the caregiver experience is also those sometimes rare moments of joy and happiness shared between the giver and receiver of care. Tell us about one of those moments of joy or happiness you shared with the person in your care.
  • Advice/Learning - and finally - Any advice you'd like to share, maybe something you learned about yourself and/or the person receiving the care.
